Be Smart, Eat Well and Move More!
The Flying Pig Kids’ Marathon, now in its 12th year, is a great opportunity for families, schools and groups. As part of The Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon, we would like to promote childhood fitness, family fun, and a lifetime marathon of healthy habits.

This program is designed for children ages 5-12 years old along with their fitness buddies (parents, teachers, leaders, mentors). IT IS NOT A RACE! Using the “Hog Log” (see link below), you can begin now and walk, jog or wheelchair the distance of a marathon, in small increments, at your own pace. Always exercise in a safe area and wear appropriate clothes and shoes.

Along with marathon miles, in your Hog Log are some Nutrition Challenges to help children make healthy eating a lifelong habit; simple steps on their marathon of good health. You can visit The Nutrition Council’s website www.nutritioncouncil.org to get your Flying Pig Nutrition Tip Sheets and more healthy eating resources.

Exercising the brain is very important too. So part of the Kids’ Marathon is to add an additional challenge to the Hog Log of 15 minutes of extra reading. The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County has terrific resources to promote fun with reading. Visit their website at kidspace.cincinnatilibrary.org to learn more.

Kids’ Marathoners have an exciting opportunity to be part of the real Flying Pig Marathon by finishing their 26th marathon mile on Saturday, May 1st during the Flying Pig Kids Marathon Final Mile event at Cincinnati’s Riverfront. The kids will cover their last mile on the actual Flying Pig Marathon course and cross the real “Finish Swine.” They get a finishers shirt, a marathon medal and all the goodies of the finish celebration ($10 registration).

Please take some time to read through the Hog Log. Then put the map and the Hog Log in a bold place where kids can follow their progress on the Flying Pig Marathon course map and keep track of all the miles, smart nutrition & reading choices made in the coming months. If you choose to be part of the Kids Final Mile event on Saturday May 1st, register using the mail-in entry form on the Hog Log or online.

A marathon is no easy task. A Greek warrior named Pheilippines first ran this awesome distance to the town of Marathon in order to deliver a message to the citizens of their military victory 26 miles away. After Pheilippines reached his destination, he breathlessly exclaimed, “We are victorious!” World-class runners win marathons in little over 2 hours. However, the average finishing time is 4-5 hours. We want you to spread your marathon over several months and have a lot of fun and develop healthy habits for life.
