Waffle House Waffle House Bonus Money Lures
    Elite Runners to Pig Marathon

Waffle House restaurants have always been known for a friendly welcome, fast service, and great value. Big bonus dollars can be added to that description. The Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon announces the addition of the Waffle House Bonus Program as an incentive for fast runners. This bonus will award the top female and/or male who breaks the course record with a $10,000 prize, totaling a possible $20,000 bonus giveaway. For elite runners, this definitely creates a friendly atmosphere offering fast times and tremendous value.

The Waffle House Bonus Program has been added to 4th running of the Cincinnati Marathon to help create more of a field for the marathon without taking away from the everyday runner's experience. The involvement of the area Waffle House franchisee, owner of 23 Greater Cincinnati area restaurants, has enabled the sizable bonus amount.

"We at Waffle House are proud to support our local community in such a worthwhile endeavor, " commented George Shearer, chief operating officer of Shearer Foods, the local Waffle House franchise group. "We hope this Bonus Award Program will enable the Flying Pig Marathon to become one of the premier events in the country."

A $10,000 bonus will be awarded to an athlete accomplishing the following during the running of the 4th Annual Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon on May 5, 2002:

  • A female who breaks the female course record set in 2000 by Rebecca Gallaher, 2:49:31
  • A male who breaks the male course record set in 1999 by Elly Rono, 2:21:15

"It will add another level of excitement to the whole race," commented Rich Williams, race director. "The Cincinnati Marathon is a fun race for the novice or everyday runner and this now adds some incentive for the more experienced elite athlete."

For runners interested in this program, contact Rich Williams, race director, at 513-719-1240.

    Clif SHOT Pace Teams
The Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon is pleased to announce that they will again offer Pace Teams at the 2002 event, led by the Clif SHOT Pace Team that recently debuted at the LA Marathon! Whether you're a first time marathoner, going for a PR or just looking for a great time on race day, the Clif SHOT Pace Team can help get you there!

The Clif SHOT Pace Team is a fixed group of eleven marathoners with a high level of both racing and pacing experience that will be appearing at 5 - 6 marathons throughout 2002. They will be leading groups to the finish line in the following times: 3:15, 3:30, 3:40, 3:50, 4:00, 4:15, 4:30, 4:45, 5:00 and 5:30.

The Clif SHOT Pace Team will be running even splits throughout the race (every mile in the same amount of time), and your leader will serve as coach, mentor, cheerleader and supporter for the whole 26.2! They'll remind you to take gels, drink and eat appropriately, and offer all the words of encouragement you'll need.

Sign up is easy! Just stop by the Clif Bar/Clif SHOT booth at the Northwood University Health & Fitness Expo and let one of the Clif SHOT Pacers know which group you'd like to run with. You'll receive a CLIF SHOT bib with your goal time, together with a free Pace Band as a secondary way to view the mile splits needed to meet your goal time. All of this is FREE to all registered Marathoners! When you sign up, they'll let you know where you'll be meeting on race morning. Starting 45 minutes before the race start, you'll see Clif SHOT Pacers lined up according to pace, holding up signs with the finish times as well as red and yellow balloons. Just fall in with your group. That's all. No check in, no sign in, just meet them and follow your Pace Leader to your best marathon ever! Sign up is also the perfect time to meet your Pacer and become comfortable with them. Ask them about their marathoning backgrounds, how they fuel themselves before and during the race, and for any other helpful tips you'd like to know from runners who've run more marathons in a year than many will run in their lives.

Finally, don't miss the Clif SHOT Pace Teams seminar on Saturday, also at the Northwood University Health & Fitness Expo at 3:15 pm. It's another great chance to learn more about the team and get all your questions answered.

If you have any further questions about the team, check out www.clifbar.com/paceteams, or contact Darris Blackford at darris@sprynet.com, or by phone at (614) 488-3632.

We'll be introducing you to the Clif SHOT Pace Team leaders between now and Marathon weekend here in the Squeal - so stay tuned in with our weekly Squeals!
